AEMC draft determination: enhancing emergency mechanisms for power system security
On 22 December the Commission released a draft determination to enhance emergency frequency control schemes in the national electricity market. The draft is in response to rule change requests, which were submitted by the South Australian government. The proposed rule changes address concerns about emergency protection, particularly in relation to South Australia’s current frequency issues, as the power system transitions away from conventional, synchronous generation – such as coal, gas and hydro – towards new non-synchronous technologies such as wind farms and solar panels. The Commission is considering these rule changes in coordination with their wider system security review. Submissions on the draft determination were due by 16 February 2016.
